August 2022

  • South Africa “Bantams”: Tony Johnson explains why and how South Africa issued the 1941 War Effort issue in a small format . These little stamps became known as “Bantams"

  • Lithuania, the first 90 days : Part Four of a  five-part detailed examination of the country’s first stamp issues on gaining independence from Russia after the First World War, by David J. Freestone.  This instalment deals with the third Kaunas issue
  • Organised philately and myself :Dave Hill looks back on his career in organised philately and his changing philatelic interests over the years.

  • Anglo-French rivalry in the Carribean, a report of the Stuart Rossiter memorial lecture which was delivered by Simon Richards FRPSL, honorary treasurer of the NPS. He demonstrates  the influence of military history on postal history, illustrated by covers sent to and from the Caribbean from the 17th to the 19th century.

  • Meeting Reports .There were three displays in the virtual meeting on Saturday 11 June 2022., South African “Bantams”, the Isle of Purbeck, and Airmails from the Gilbert and Ellis Islands. Tony Johnson who presented the “Bantams” also wrote a feature about this issue, Chris Oliver who presented “Purbeck” showed several postcards and prints of Corfe Castle , of Swanage and of the “Jurassic coast “. Keith Johnson showed the 1963 issue of the Gilbert and Ellis Islands marking its first regular air service

  • Report of the 122nd Annual General Meeting of the National Philatelic Society which saw the election of a new President and was followed by various displays covering Sierra Leone self stick stamps in used (Michael Round), Tematic Bird issues (Omar El Karti), Jaipur (Peter Mellor) and the first GB Prestige Booklets (Ian Harvey).

  • Book Reviews - Detailed and informative reviews are a regular feature of the magazine. Among a number of books reviewed in this issue are a work on the Sterling issues of Nigeria 1961-72,  British West Africa and their French Airmail services, a catalogue of Norwegian Airmail, and A guide to the private hotel posts of  Jersey.

  • Newsmix :This news round up includes   a preview of Autumn Stampex, an award for a South Coast society, and Freddy Mercury's Stamps on show.

October 2022

  • Bell, Edison, Marconi, Meucci, Tesla - Who invented what ?: John Davies looks at issues commemorating Alexander Graham Bell and Thomas Edison and the conflicting claims of Meucci and Tesla.

  • Lithuania, the first 90 days - The fifth and final part of a  five-part detailed examination of the country’s first stamp issues on gaining independence from Russia after the First World War, by David J. Freestone.  This instalment deals with overprints on Russian stamps and a bibliography.

  • Tramway Parcel Stamps, a little known philatelic area - Michael L Goodman writes about this little researched aspect of philately after visiting the Crich Tramway Village  where some specimens were on display. .

  • Thoughts on a Design Index - Michael Round takes a critical examination of indexes to stamp designs in SG catalogues.

  • Meeting Reports :A report of our first ever London meeting at the premises of the Royal Philatelic Society on Saturday 10 September. A successful combined room and postal auction was followed by this year's Peter Brack Memorial Display - "Chile Overall" given by Hugh Johnson.

  • Book Reviews - Detailed and informative reviews are a regular feature of the magazine. Among books reviewed  are Stanley Gibbons Stamps of the World, GB Concise and specialist Italy and Colonies.

  • Newsmix :This news round up includes the result of the pool for the best music stamp issued last year.
     

December 2022

  • The 2022 Philatelic Congress of Great Britain: Reports of the Congress held in Birmingham in September. Richard West provides a general report while Peter Mellor homes in on the successful NPS  presentation and its displays.

  • Melville papers key to 1909 Congress: Alan Spicer, of the Philatelic Congresses of GB Study Group, examines the philatelic politics of the first ever GB Congress in 1909. 
     
  • Christmas Quiz : A two page illustrated Christmas Quiz devised by Michael Round
     
  • Meeting Reports :A report of our October on-line meeting when David Ros Wilson presented  his collection of GB halfpenny stamps and postal history. And a well illustrated report on “The Munich Crisis 1938 ”, a social philatelic view of this milestone on the way to World War II which was presented at our second London meeting held in November.

  • NPS News :Preview of future meetings, including the virtual one on December 11th featuring a presentation of the 1 Fr 50 Petain stamp by Mick Bister, and the controversial history of war time France. Plus the January 14th London meeting where the display will be “Fossils and dinosaurs” by Bob Higgins, preceded by the usual room and postal auction.
     
  • Packet :Thanks to Steve Harris, of Nuneaton, a new volunteer, the foreign packet  circuit will continue  to accept new materiall while  the GB  and Commonwealth circuits carry on as usual.

  • Index to the Philatelic Press:The usual  December index to the philatelic  press, compiled by Rodney Knight.

  • Editor's column: Michael L. Goodman urges the end of “tatty “ new issues and discusses possible changes in ownership of Royal Mail.

  • Book Reviews - Detailed and informative reviews are a regular feature of the magazine. Among books reviewed  this issue are  SG New Zealand and Dependencies, SG Indian Ocean and Mail by Rail by Peter Johnson.
