                                  OCTOBER & DECEMBER 2001
Stamp Lover

October 2001

  • More on Melville - A cover obtained by our President, Frank Jones, prompted Michael Furnell to research our Society's founder's activities in stamp dealing. In this, the first of two articles, he describes Fred Melville's business as a stamp dealer in 1918-1922, concentrating on the War Stamps associated with World War I and the issues of the new countries that emerged from that conflict, which he referred to as "Neurope". Also recalled is the Philatelic Institute through which collectors could undertake correspondence courses on philately.

  • East Timor Update- another update on the revival of postal services in this country.
  • Leeward Islands - In his series of articles on "Forgotten Countries", Bernard Towler tells us this month about the stamps of these islands.

  • The Origins of the Stamps of Greenland are explained by Eric Glasgow.

  • New Signatories to the Roll of Distinguished Philatelists - A report on the four distinguished philatelists recently invited to sign this Roll.

  • Random Jottings from BELGICA 2001 Brussels - Ian Nutley organised a party visit for members of the National Philatelic Society to BELGICA 2001 in June. Here he gives his personal impressions of this international exhibition.

  • Mail by the British to and from Latin America 1800-1880. Phil Kenton describes the expansion of trade with Latin America in the 19th Century as reflected in mail sent by British ships - Royal Navy vessels, British packets and British-owned private ships.

  • Museum of Communications - A brief report on the PTT Museum in The Hague.

December 2001

  • Stamps of the Ukraine - A story about some stamps issued by this little known country by Tony Leliw.

  • A Greek Islands Stamp Story - Bernard Towler writes about the stamps of Greece following his vacation in the Greek islands.

  • Classic Cars - Collectors of cars on stamps may be interested in K. Austin's "Classic Cars" feature.

  • More on Melville - Part 2 The feature commenced in our October issue, continues with a review of Fred Melville's activities as Editor of "The Postage Stamp" magazine immediately following the end of World War I.

  • More on Comoros - Following the interest shown in Bernard Towler's recent article on the French Comoro Islands, Michael Round gives us a more detailed study in his article "More on Comoros".

  • The Story behind the Cover No 3 - an item of Postal Agent's mail from World War I by Bernard Tranmer

  • The Manchester Postal Museum reviewed - The organiser David Harrop is a regular exhibitor at STAMPEX.

  • British Press Checklist - Listing editorial features in leading UK stamp magazines during January-June 2001

  • Sweden 3 skilling-banco yellow - The rare 3 skilling-banco stamp of Sweden, printed yellow instead of green, has been in the news recently, so we reprint the story of its discovery which appeared in the May 1923 issue of "Stamp Lover".
