OCTOBER & DECEMBER 2006

October 2006

  • An Item from my Collection - Tim Schofield looks at the The Pearson Hill GB cancellation.

  • Gold Coast and Ghana - An introduction to the Gold Coast and Ghana’s stamps by Ian Anderson.

  • They Thought it Was All Over . . . - No, this is not another piece of nostalgia for England’s one-time World Cup win back in 1966. Instead, it concerns little-known events that took place on Java twenty years earlier, when it was part of the newly liberated Dutch East Indies as reported by Alan Bartlett.

  • Cambodia’s Stamp Story - Cambodia's first stamps appeared in 1951. This article by Bernard Towler describes and shows examples of the stamps.

  • Fings Aint What They Used to be’ - Harpenden Post Office in the 1930s
In September 1928 Harpenden Post Office moved into newly built premises in Station Road, (which it still occupies) taking its letterbox with it. Eric Brandreth recalls a campaign for a letter box and for the upgrading of the new Post Office and gives us a glimpse of a time of collections and deliveries whose frequency we can but envy.

  • Using the Internet for Research - Fiji –  A Sailor’s Letters by David Alford. As those who have used it know, the Internet can be a very useful tool for research purposes. (It can also waste a lot of time if you’re not careful!). However, the information obtained shows what can be done. ....

Plus News from Far & Near, Reports on the National PS Meeting  held in July (Members Showing) and August (1911 Coronation Airmails by Peter Lister) Letters to the Editor etc

December 2006

  • Out and About with Members - Mike Goodman reports on his visit to the "Art by Post" exhibition in The Hague.

  • "Madame Joseph" Forgeries - Brian Cartwright FRPSL gives the background to his collection and the display that he gave at the September 2006 meeting of the National.

  • Hastings & East Sussex Philatelic Society - A Bookplate from this Society prompts Brian Birch to take a look at this Society and its history.

  • Judging at the National Level - David Alford had the opportunity to attend the judging at Stampex in 2005 and describes his experience.

  • An Item from my Collection - Tom Wilson  ponders over a cover from Lebanon to Scotland sent in May 1940.

  • Checklist of Articles in the British Philatelic Press January - June 2006.
