October 2007

  • President's Letter - Christopher Oliver sets out his aims for the National Philatelic Society following his appointment as our new President

  • Odd Jottings - Edinburgh and Never on Sunday - some musings from "Old Codger"
     

  • New Issues Spotlight - Centenary of Scouting - a look and some of the stamps issued in 2007 to mark the centenary of the Scout Movement.

  • Cape Town Pageant - Chris Oliver looks at the labels and postcards issued to mark the opening of the First Union Parliament of South Africa in 1910.

  • Postcard Corner - two more cards - one Japanese and the other British - are examined by Dave Hill.

  • The Stamps of the Leeward Islands - A View from the Archives - Part 2 - This latest instalment by Peter Mellor commences with the re-introduction of the presidential issues by Antigua, Dominica, Montserrat and St Kitts-Nevis and takes the story through to the War Taxes which remained in force until 1922.. 
     

  • Safety and Sea and World Poster Stamps are two subjects covered in the reports of the displays given at the August and September Meetings of the National Philatelic Society by Mike Czuczman and Charles Kiddle respectively.  Mike Goodman also reports on the Members Displays given at the July Meeting.

  • Memories of a Steward  - H E Quinton reflects on pre-Stampex days.

  • Collecting and Selling - Stamp Collectors spend vastly more time buying than selling but sometimes selling is a necessity - Derek Diamond looks at the pros and cons of different approaches.

  • A Checklist for Philatelic Speakers, Programme Secretaries (and Listeners) -  Jeremy Martin provides some useful tips and food for thought.

  • From Sugar Cane to Cane Sugar - David C Hunter explains all with the assistance of the stamp album.

  • The Stamps of the Leeward Islands - A View from the Archives - Part 3 The King's Heads and Badge Issues by Peter Mellor - With new designs, watermarks and postage rates the 1920's were a busy time for the collector of the Leeward Islands.
