February 2011

  • The Return of the prodigal wife - David Alford's series on the correspondence between Arthur Hubert Stanley Megaw CBE ("Peter") and his wife, takes us through the period of the battle of El Alamein  with Peter back in Cyprus and his wife Electra in Cairo up to December 1943 when the Colonial Office decided that Peter would be remaining in Cyprus and allowed his wife to return. 

  • Hanover - A Brief guide to the host city for HABRIA 

  • For Each Other - Hungary's Flood Charity Stamps - Two recent versions of Hungary's "For Each Other" Charity Stamps prompts a look at the use of these stamps and previous Flood Relief stamps from Hungary by Peter Mellor. 

  • New Issues

    • Stamps from Mauritius to mark the 200th Anniversary of the British conquest of the Isle de France

    • Lithuania State Awards - the annual series of stamps featuring the country's highest state awards most of which date from pre-War Lithuania and were reinstated in 1991following the restoration of independence.

    • British Antarctic Territitory - stamps featuring photographs taken by Herbert Ponting on the ill-fated Scott Expedition to the Antarctic of 1910-13.

  • Recent Displays - Reports on the displays given at recent meetings - Ethiopia by Allen Wood on Salisbury on Saturday 13 November and Pigeons (and Doves) by Harry Wright on 18th November.

  • The King's Head - a report on the presentation given by Alan Moorcroft FRPS and organised by the Friends of the BPMA.

  • Annual Competitions - An illustrated account of the winning entries in the 2010 National Philatelic Society Annual Competitions held on 11 December.

April 2011

  • Pigeon Post post script - As a post script to the Pigeons and Doves display given by Harry Wright last year and reported in February 2011 Stamp Lover, Keith Tranmer describes a special pigeon post event held in Austria in 1936.

  • Freemasonry on US Stamps - A look at some freemasons who have appeared on American stamps in an article that originally appeared in Stamp Insider magazine and was written by the late Alan Randall Jones who sadly died earlier in 2011.

  • Private Posts - Dave Hill has been hot on the trail of private posts and their stamps since the article on New Zealand Private Posts that appeared in the February 2010 issue of Stamp Lover and describes his findings.

  • The End is Nigh  - David Alford's series on the correspondence between Arthur Hubert Stanley Megaw CBE ("Peter") and his wife, Electra this time involves us in a visit by Winston Churchill's visit, with a diversion to look at some of the Consular Service and South African revenue stamps to be found in the couple's travel documents of the period.

  • Hanover - A Brief guide to the host city for HABRIA - Part 2

  • Hanover's blind king on stamps - The stamps of the reign of King George V of Hanover (1851-1866) are described by Simon Richards.

  • New Issues

    • Three communications stamps from Greenland range from Kayak Post to the Greenland Contact submarine cable.

    • The RAF Search & Rescue service was 70 years old in February 2011 and the Falkland Islands has issued four stamps  marking the event.  

    • Like the United Kingdom, the Czech Republic conducted a census in March 2011 but issued a stamp to publicise the event on 5 January 2011.

    • Jersey Transport III - Six stamps featuring a fine selection of motor coaches that once graced the roads of the island.

    • Iceland has marked the 5oth Anniversary of the World Wild Life Fund with the issue of four stamps showing some of the Icelandic breeding birds that appear in the survey of endangered species first compiled in 2000.

  • Recent Displays - Reports on the displays given at recent meetings - Aspects of British Borneo by Brian Trotter  RDP FRPSL given on 8 January 2011 and Irish Life by Peter Wood on 12 February.
