February 2025

  • The First Stamp to commemorate Christmas : Julian Bagwell  sets out his criteria for which issues should be regarded as special ones for Christmas and examines which ones were the first.

  • Herbert Edgar Watson and The Stamp Collectors Miscellany by Brian Birch. An investigation into a philatelic literature dealer of the early 20th century and a short-lived journal.

  • A curiosity from a small village on an island. Michael Torregiani writes about postcards from a  village on the Isle of Wight.

  • Politically incorrect Poole, Michael L. Goodman wonders if some of the writings of  of Bertram W H Poole more than a century ago would be tolerated these days.

  • Nyasaland on reflection. Michael Round draws attention to a little known flaw  on some of its Queen Elizabeth II pictorials.

  • Meeting reports; Some covers from Barry Feltham's Space Race display in November 2024, the December virtual meeting featuring Julian Bagwell's Christmas material and January's London meeting where Mick Bister showed  French Somali Coast.

  • Newsmix : Obituary of Michael Roberts, President of the Royal Philatelic Society; New issue programme for Great Britain.

  • Book Reviews – Detailed and informative reviews are a regular feature of the magazine. Reviewed in this issue are Hugh Robinson, A Prisoner of War Story 1939-1945, edited by the late Gavin Fryer and Paid postmarks of the United Kingdom 1840-2006 by Cyril R H Parsons

  • Europhilex Preview Information on the 2025 International exhibition. The editor also describes how the National Philatelic Society enjoys a long  tradition of participating in major UK exhibitions and is sponsoring the Court of Honour at Europhilex. The Society’s Hon. Treasurer, Simon Richards will also be signing the prestigious  Roll of Distinguished Philatelists.

  • Christmas, some postal history - Julian Bagwell follows up his previous feature on Christmas stamps with some postal history, mostly mail posted on Christmas Day.
  • Tuga Post, Cinderellas or essential sideline for modern Portugal collectors? - Michael L. Goodman highlights the private post handling international postcards from Portugal and the pictorial labels produced by the company.

  • Non PC philately continued - Michael Round follows up an article about Bertram Poole in the previous issue with an account of a philatelic stampede in Cairo in 1927.

  • Meeting reports - A further report on Mick Bister's online display of French Somali Coast in January, and details of An Introduction to Brazilian Philately, Part 1, February's virtual display by Janet and Nick Nelson which showed Brazil from classic “Bulls Eyes”  to date. Brazil Part 2 is scheduled for next year. The reports also cover Mauritius, the display given by Eric Hutton at the March London Meeting.

  • Newsmix - Obituary of of Constanze Dennis, Managing Director of Grosvenor Auctions, one of the most original and talented personalities  in modern philately. Special Ukraine Trump issue for 1 April. Regarding EuroPhilex, the editor also his first ever entry into a postcard competition.

  • Book Reviews – Detailed and informative reviews are a regular feature of the magazine. Reviewed in this issue Stanley Gibbons Collect British Stamps 76th edition, (2025), and Dominica, Philately to 1967, by Simon Richards.

  • EuroPhilex 2025 Report - The editor writes a personal view of his experiences at EuroPhilex, where he helped set up and staff the NPS table, bought the special issues at the Royal Mail counter, viewed the Court of Honour and the exhibits, and attended the ceremony where the Hon Treasurer of the National Philatelic Society (NPS), Simon Richards signed the  prestigious Roll of Distinguished Philatelists. The names of NPS members who exhibited and competed in this international exhibition are given elsewhere in this issue.

  • New Collectibles in prospect for GB postage label enthusiastsMichael L Goodman describes the new generation of self-service kiosks due to be rolled out across UK post offices. These will handle parcels as well as letters and wonders what these will have to offer to philatelists.
  • Yoga, A journey to health - Briti Deb highlights an Indian miniature sheet featuring Yoga.

  • More non-PC philately - Michael Round treads a tightrope with a Zambian stamp.

  • Checklist of Articles in the British Philatelic Press, July to December 2024 – the Index compiled by Rodney Knight

  • Meeting reports – New Zealand Airways displayed by John Biddlecombe at the Online meeting of 14 April 2025 when the scheduled speaker was unavailable, and The President’s Display, The UPU Colour Code Scheme, given by Peter Mellor at the London Meeting on Saturday 17 May.

  • Book Reviews – Reviewed this issue are Stanley Gibbons Commonwealth Stamp Catalogue - Falkland Islands & Dependencies, 9th ed. 2024 and  the Yvert et Tellier Catalogue of  French Colonies postal stationery (trans).

  • News coverage includes issues for the 80th Anniversary of VE Day, the 2025 Stuart Rossiter Seminar, the Trump tariff war, whilst the editor comments how philatelists can be “vandals” too.
